Our Mission

Mirrors in Education provides resources, community, and professional development to educators of color to facilitate their recruitment and retention within Pennsylvania public school districts with low minority educator representation.

Mirrors in Education came about from a collective thinktank of educators who wanted to change the experiences our children had in the K-12 education system.

Research shows Black students are 13% more likely to graduate from high school and enroll in college if they’ve had one Black teacher in elementary school and 32% more likely if they’ve had multiple.

In PA, less than 6% of our teachers are teachers of color. Of those numbers, over 50% work in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, leaving many of PA's children of color without a teacher that looks like them. We plan to change that.

School Districts of Focus

Mirrors in Education specifically focuses on Districts with 2% or fewer minority teacher population as reported by the Research For Action study completed by Anna Shaw-Amoah, David Lapp, and Dae Y. Kim.
